Kaki King
By Catrina Maxwell

Kaki King? To many people, she is known as the Queen on the acoustic guitar in some people's eyes. Her real name is Katherine King. According to Kaki, as a child she would pronounce her own name Kaki and it has stuck ever since. After graduating from Westminster High School, here in Atlanta, Kaki would attend NYU. She wasn't sure where she was going in terms of her future. While in college she became ill with stomach problems and spent a lot of time in her dorm room there she found comfort in playing her guitar. She then would go on to play in subway stations to make a little extra money, she realized that this is the dream she wanted to follow.

I had the opportunity to catch one of her two sold out shows here in Atlanta on January 27, 2006 at the Red Light Café. Kaki's soft-spoken voice exuded confidence as well as humor. When she first took the stage she greeted the audience and began playing her first song. She was playing a guitar placed across her legs and was using a guitar slide and lot of effects. The quality of the sound was incredible. If you closed your eyes you would have thought there were multiple guitars in the room. Once she stopped you could tell the audience loving her performance. She then said "In fear of sounding cocky I just made that up for you guys…" Much like VH1's Storytellers, the show would go on with Kaki telling us stories from her past. She shared her feelings about her music and how some of the songs were created. She expressed how she would one day have Morrissey's baby, although he wasn't aware of this. The place was packed and the crowd loved her. Afterwards she talked, signed CDs and had her pictures taken with her fans. It was very obvious that she really appreciated the people that came out and showed their support.
