Are you jonesing for a good
shot of guitar? I’ve got a fix for you. The new CD from Totally Savage,
"Trouble Dead Ahead," is a retro-trip to the days of stadium rock, beer
drinking, bar room blasting, pick up that guitar and play.
The recipe is as follows:
Take one part Lynyrd Skynyrd, one part Van Halen, one part Muddy Waters and
mix thoroughly with a rock-solid rhythm section. Top off with young
enthusiastic vocals. Yes, a lot of bands have tried this formula before.
Totally Savage pulls it off!

Chad Brown’s vocals bring
emotion into the songs blending perfectly with the poignant lyrics written
by Larry Savage. While the music may be toe-tapping and head-banging, the
lyrics are a time capsule of experiences we have all been through and can
relate to.
"Trouble Dead Ahead" is
definitely a showcase for Larry’s guitar gymnastics, but not overplayed,
leaving the songs enjoyable as a whole. This is not a CD of some guitar
“hot-shot” accompanied by a couple of other guys in the background. The
rhythm guitar, drums and bass tracks were all recorded simultaneously, with
only the solos and vocals being overdubbed. Rumor has it the drummer, Jim
‘The Rock’ Callaway, did almost every song in one take. Larry doesn’t play
it safe with his guitar tones either. Where most players would go for the
standard blues tone, he uses a very processed, modern sound. And, when you
might expect a freak-out solo, he often uses very basic chords, with only a
hint of effects. This leaves the recording’s feel very “live”, but also
solid and textured.
So, get your fix. If you want
a great traveling CD, go to the
band’s website
or
cdbaby.com and order a copy of "Trouble Dead Ahead." Warning: Throw this
in your car’s CD player and you may find it honing in on the nearest blues,
honky-tonk or rock club! Just try to find the one where Totally Savage is
playing and I’m sure you’ll have a great time.
