I walked into CJ's
Landing in Atlanta, GA. on Saturday, July 20th to see the band
Wormbelly out of Charleston, S.C. I have been hearing a great deal
about this band from reliable sources. When I found a free second, I
checked out their website and I really liked what I heard. |

Truth be told… after
seeing them live, I was blown away. The recorded music and the
images at
www.wormbelly.com do nothing to reflect the talent of this band.
I'm not easily impressed, but these guys were incredible! Fronted by
the sheer rock star persona of Chris Patterson (Chris is the
spitting image of Brad Pitt in the movie "True Romance") and fueled
by the keyboards and performance art of the man known only as GoGo,
Wormbelly ripped through their set with confidence and
professionalism. The lights, the smoke, the energy, oh my! Added
emotion and vibe came from guitarist Kevin Graham. Bassist Todd Few
stood up there shirtless and thumping like a bronzed Adonis. Drummer
KC Hazelwood pounded the drums flawlessly. This was most evident
with the hypnotic, military backbeat on the song "Hush". I was told
that this song was added to the set as a favor to soundman Fran Mann
because he absolutely loved it the last time they played CJ's. …And
for good reason. The song rocked! Other highlights included the set
opener, "Unconventional", and the dark and beautiful "33". For those
of you unfamiliar with CJ's Landing, it is really a diamond in the
rough. The Buckhead area still turns mighty scary around 1am, but
you are relatively safe before that.
Once in the club,
skip the crappy acoustic cover song/sing-a-long stuff on the front
porch. That is strictly for the duckheads and buttondown crowd. If
you are a music fan…. GO STRAIGT TO THE BACK. DO NOT STOP. DO NOT
PASS GO. The room is reminiscent of a smaller Smith's Olde Bar. A
true listening room with great sound. I recommend this bar to those
who haven't been there before. The talent is almost always good.
There are a few exceptions, but that is the same everywhere. Because
Wormbelly is an out of town band, the crowd was pretty thin. That's
a ton of people who missed out on a band that is most definitely on
the rise. What a shame. That's Atlanta for you. 10 great bands at 10
great clubs. Each with a whole 10 people in the audience. GET OUT
THERE FOLKS. See these bands while you can. After Wormbelly, my new
favorite band, eden, took the stage.
I can't say enough
about eden. What's always nice about going to an eden show is the
ladies. They are out in force and they are looking good. Check out
more on these bands at their homesites:

Anyway, back to the
bed to rest up for another dark, smoky night in an Atlanta club.
Look for more reviews coming soon! All the best and keep rockin'.
